A new work order is arriving - fast. AI and globalisation will have a massive impact in terms of what we do and how we work, with the pace of change already underway only likely to increase. Young people graduating now are likely to work in 17 different jobs – many yet unknown and unknowable - across 5 careers, through a working life of 60 to 70 years.
We are not yet doing enough to prepare young people to thrive in these uncertain – but exciting – times. These questions are very real – and urgent:
How do we ensure that young people are engaging with the world of work throughout their education?
How do we support young people to plan their careers?
How do we create flexible opportunities for young people – and other workers – to keep building new skills, in the workplace as well as the traditional education system?
How do we empower - and not hold back - young people who learn, plan, act and experience the world in a very different way than older workers?
The 21C Skills Lab is hosting a series of events to explore these questions on 12 and 13 February in Wellington and Auckland. We are delighted to be hosting Jan Owen, the charismatic Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation for Young Australians, whose New Work Order research based on big data from the Australian employment market is exciting international acclaim (see bio below). We are bringing Jan together with leading New Zealanders including:

New Work Order Learning Accelerator with Jan Owen (Auckland)
The Learning Accelerator will turbo-charge your understanding of the new world of work and what new research is showing us about jobs, skill building and career development, and allow you the opportunity to imagine and plan with leading NZ practitioners the new life-time learning and career development ecosystem we need.
The session will feature an inspirational and fact-filled plenary with Jan Owen; a panel featuring leading New Zealanders working within the education system and business; a vibrant youth perspective; and exploration and ideation workshops bringing together groups around areas including: careers guidance for young people; facilitating learning about the world of work in schools and tertiary; and workplace learning and micro-credentialling.

Speaker & Panelist bios:
Jan is a highly regarded social entrepreneur, innovator, influencer and author who has spent the past 25 years growing Australia’s youth, social enterprise and innovation sectors.
In 2012 she was named Australia’s inaugural Australian Financial Review and Westpac Woman of Influence; in 2014 she received the Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) from the University of Sydney; and was awarded membership to the Order of Australia in 2000. She is the author of Every Childhood Lasts a Lifetime (1996) and The Future Chasers (2014).
Jan is the CEO of the Foundation for Young Australians and YLab, the global youth futures lab. Her lifelong mission is to unleash the potential of young people to lead positive change in the world. Jan’s enlightening, challenging and entertaining presentations are pragmatic as opposed to idealistic, with the aim of transforming the way society talks about and engages with young people – from treating them as a problem to be solved to recognising that young people are contributing to and driving social change.

Claire is a Deputy Principal at Hobsonville Point Secondary School - a new secondary school that opened at the beginning of 2014. She is also Co-Founder of the new City Senior School at the Launching Pad, to open in Auckland in 2019. Claire is a founding council member of the Education Council of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
In 2011-2012 she was the Director of e-learning at Epsom Girls Grammar School. She has lead and taught English for 17 years, her roles ranging from facilitator of the ICTs in English community on English Online, Auckland Secondary English Facilitator to Head of English Faculty at Auckland Girl’s Grammar School. She has worked at a national level in assessment and curriculum in English. In 2009 Claire was a Ministry of Education e-fellow for which she undertook a study of how ICTs can be used to support literacy in and beyond the English classroom.
Claire also enjoys working with agencies such as NZTC, NZQA, Network for Learning, NetSafe and the 21st Century Learning Reference Group with a focus on enabling future-focused change and supporting teachers and students in blended learning environments.
Claire is passionate about her family, education, design, living by the mantra - “you can never be overdressed or overeducated”.
As Head of People and Culture, Joanne leads a team responsible for delivering Fonterra’s people strategy and organisational health and engagement. Prior to this appointment, Joanne was the Regional Director of Fonterra Ingredients, South and East Asia, based in Singapore, and responsible for the leadership of Fonterra’s $2.4b South & East Asian Ingredients business. Joanne first joined Fonterra in 2003.
She is an experienced senior human resources and commercial leader, with over a decade of experience in the dairy industry and a strong understanding of how Fonterra operates. Having worked in both Global and Regional roles, including time spent working in Latin America, the US, Europe and Singapore, Joanne has developed extensive experience working with diverse cultures and customers. Prior to Fonterra, Joanne worked predominantly in the Airline Industry, in New Zealand and Australia. Joanne’s degree qualifications are in Law and Spanish (LLB/BA) and she also holds a post graduate degree in business studies, and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Directors (GAICD).
Alexia is 18-years-old, just finished high-school, yet her love of Women’s empowerment and STEM (Science, Technology Engineering, and Math) has led her to a level of influence well beyond her years. Bypassing the slow, traditional path to leadership she acted on her passions and established GirlBoss New Zealand, an organisation which encourages young women to embrace STEM, Entrepreneurship and higher leadership. In just 18 months, GirlBoss is New Zealand's second largest women network with nearly 8000 members.
Alexia has spoken to nearly 20,000 young people, teachers and business professionals about gender equity, STEM, and the future of work. Her speaking arrangements have included: 13 New Zealand High Schools, Massey University Finance Festival, The Global Women Network, Association for Women in Sciences Conference, Chartered Accountants Women in Business Conference, Graduate Women's Network, Women in Super AGM, The March for Science, AMP Amplify, and the Westpac Girls in Tech Conference.
